Hello! I'm Tammy

Licensed Therapist

Haven’t we all wondered at some point, “What went wrong…Why me…How on Earth did I get here?” A difficult child or teen, a sick loved one, a relationship on the rocks, and unexpected job termination, a death, a divorce… these are just some of the things that can completely turn our world upside down and put us into a tailspin. Sometimes we are able to navigate through life’s struggles with strength and perseverance, other times we just need help.

My Approach & Values

As a solution-focused counselor, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can’t change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I work with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues providing services that span from therapy for anxiety and depression counseling, to parenting support, couples counseling and beyond. In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each of my clients individual needs to help attain the personal growth they’re striving for.

I am a compassionate and professional advocate for each individual’s needs and have a practical, emphatic, goal-oriented approach to counseling. I provide a safe, encouraging, and respectful environment in which individuals may comfortably achieve their therapeutic goals, some of which can include gaining new insights, understanding, and practical skills for maintaining mental and emotional wellness. Therapy is collaborative and my sessions are tailored to best fit the needs and desires of each person. I look forward to working with you!

My Experience

Life experience is an important asset when counseling others, and I have plenty to draw from. At the age of 55, I have experienced the pain of divorce, both in childhood and as an adult. I have helped family members and friends who have experienced struggles associated with depression, anxiety, dependency, infidelity, divorce, parenting, step parenting and blended family issues. From a very early age, I had a yearning to understand human behavior and to grow through each experience.

My Education

I completed my Masters in Psychology at Chapman University, and am currently providing counseling support in a private practice in Irvine, Ca. My personal experience in helping others through such problems has given me a deep understanding and insight into the emotions that accompany them, and my educational and clinical experience has enabled me to put theory to work and help people in need.

In my 20’s I navigated through the corporate world and learned a lot about organizational psychology and relationships in the work place. In my early 30’s, I became a dedicated stay-at-home mom to my three children, where I learned a great deal about child development, multi-tasking, and most importantly, patience. In my 40’s, I found myself searching for a higher purpose for my life, one that would be rewarding and fulfilling. I knew that I had a gift of connecting with people, as I truly enjoyed hearing about their lives. I found that by lending an empathetic, non-judgmental ear, and asking thought provoking questions, people easily opened up to me about their life struggles. It was after a lot of soul searching, that I decided to take what I had been studying my whole life, people and relationships, and put it to good use.

I specialize in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), a highly successful evidence based treatment approach to healing relationships. Research reveals that when using EFT, 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and 90% show significant improvements. These results are also less susceptible to relapse than those from other approaches. Couples often feel hopeless when love has disintegrated into arguing and pain, when they have become more distant and when intimacy is less frequent and less satisfying. In couples therapy, we will work to recover the special connection that brought you together, to heal past wounds, to move past the pain of past disappointments and/or infidelities, and to learn to turn to your partner and discuss your most important concerns.

I also thoroughly enjoy working with adolescents and teens. As a public middle school counselor in Huntington Beach, Ca, I counseled a diverse group of adolescents who were struggling academically, emotionally and behaviorally. Several of the students that I counseled were homeless, in foster care, and/or from very poor families; others were from affluent families. Some I counseled for issues of peer conflict, academic struggles, and misconduct. Others I counseled for sadness, family issues, low self esteem, and self-harm. I often collaborated with parents, teachers, foster-care representatives, and the school psychologist in a team effort to help the child at hand.
